In addition to the
Library Bill of Rights and the
Freedom to Read statement, supplemental
information provided by the committee included an
article about the author, which states in part:
Playwright and actor Harvey
Fierstein has called himself the first "real live,
out-of-the-closet queer on Broadway." The dramatist
has showed theater and motion picture audiences
nationwide that "straight love and gay love is all
the same nonsense" … through productions that
address "problems of love and relationships and
commitment that we all share." His breakthrough
play, Torch Song Trilogy, chronicles a drag queen's
search for constant love and a family…
Aware of his sexual orientation
even as a child, Fierstein performed in New York
nightclubs as a female impersonator in his early
teens. His theatrical career began in 1971 when he
played the lead character – an overweight,
asthmatic lesbian maid…Fierstein began writing his
own plays, including such pieces as …Freaky Pussy.
In 1976, as a form of therapy after breaking off a
two-year romance, he wrote and performed in a
semi-autobiographical play about a drag
queen…whose bisexual lover leaves him for a woman…
…when Torch Song Trilogy was
made into a movie, again starring Fierstein…the
1988 film was often censured for its unapologetic
depiction of the promiscuity of the 1970's and for
avoiding the issue of AIDS…Fierstein answered the
first criticism by voicing his intent to preserve
the movie's realism. "I'm not ashamed of what we
did…There was anonymous sex – there still is.
Hopefully, it's now safe anonymous sex…
